Dear Parent/Carer
‘He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.
But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’
Luke 15: 11-32
We are quickly approaching the end of term and I note that it has certainly been a very busy one! Our minds are very focussed on learning but we are constantly reminded of the ongoing challenges experienced by communities up north and overseas. It is certainly time for thoughts and prayers to all who are suffering loss, anxiety and no longer feel safe in their current situations.
I wish to remind our community that COVID safe practices continue to be supported at St Paul’s. This includes:
- All staff/volunteers are requiring double dose vaccination to work within the school
- Encouraging the RAT testing across the school week. (The College has released the third batch of RAT’s to staff and students last week- no more are expected at this stage)
- The monitoring of COVID like symptoms and testing as required. Isolating where required by health regulations and seeking medical advice if needed
- Wearing of facemasks on public transport
- Rooms continue to be well ventilated
- There is also additional cleaning taking place in ‘high traffic’ areas
I thank all families for their ongoing support regarding uniform, punctual and consistent attendance and mobile phone usage. There has been a marked improvement in these areas which is pleasing.
Quality learning and teaching continues to be critical at the College. Our staff continue to work through processes that provide opportunity to reflect on what we are doing in the classroom in ensuring that student’s academic growth is observable. All our parents/carers must be confident in what we do at St Paul’s and at ANY TIME make contact with the College and request information on how their child/ren is progressing and what needs to be further supported.
We have commenced our ‘Meet the Principal’ ROADSHOWS across the region and have enjoyed visiting these communities. We travelled out to South West Rocks, Crescent Head and Macksville and the interest has been strong. It would appear that we will again be blessed by another large Year 7 cohort in 2023 – which is most exciting!
Finally, we are hoping to encourage our families back on site to share all we do at the College. We kicked this off with our Year 7 Belonging Day which was combined with our Meet the Teachers BBQ. It was a tremendous experience and was wonderful to see so many families. Educating young people has always involved partnership with families and I would encourage you all to take time to come to our various activities and reconnect with the staff and the College. We need you all to make the College a richer more vibrant experience!
Kind regards
Mr David JOHNS B.Ed., Cert. Gifted Ed., Grad. Cert. Adol. Health and Welfare, M.Ed. (Ed Lead), M.Ed. (Theol)

Points of difference in Learning & Teaching at St Paul’s College:
“The Lighthouse for 21st Century learning in the Macleay Valley”
During recent weeks, Mr Johns, Mrs Shipton and I have been meeting with families at St Paul’s Roadshows where there has been an opportunity to discuss all aspects of the College, as families consider the important decision of where to send their children for secondary school. In terms of Learning and Teaching, parents often ask, “what are some of the new programs at St Paul’s in the classroom as a point of difference from other schools”.
Class placement: During 2021, the school reviewed the merits of students being streamed on rank order or non-streamed classes. In 2022 and onwards, the class placement tool at St Paul’s is based on student work ethic, no matter the student’s academic ability. In Years 7 & 8, students are placed in classes where the identification of the learning and social ability of each student is identified creating clusters of students within each class and growth closely monitored. In Years 9 & 10, the key learning aspects are work ethic and consistency in engaging with their teacher. Year 9 and 10 is critical in building skills to launch into the Prelim and HSC courses. Families are very welcome to discuss their child’s progress anytime with Mr Melville.
Opportunities for outstanding students in acceleration programs: in 2022, there are a number of students engaged in accelerating in HSC courses prior to reaching Year 12. The outstanding writers in Year 10 are invited to accelerate both their Preliminary and HSC SOR1 courses in Year 11, there are 17 students completing this program in 2022. There are Year 11 students accelerating Mathematics Extension 3 unit and 4 Unit courses in 2022, while we have an outstanding Year 8 student completing Stage 4 French Continuers in 2022 allowing the completion of Preliminary and HSC French Continuers in 2023 and 2024. The school will choose a number of current outstanding Year 8 & 9 students to enrol in the Preliminary and HSC Investigating Science courses in 2023 & 2024 with Mrs Littlejohn (who accelerated a Year 8 student in 2019 and scored the top result in the state in the 2020 HSC). St Paul’s seeks to identify outstanding academic students and extend their ability and develop their skills to maximize their opportunities in the HSC.
Opportunities in Vocational Education Training programs: St Paul’s presents an outstanding reputation as a VET school, named Australian VET School of the Year in 2020. Led brilliantly by Mr Graham Bramley, the school has provided outstanding resources and staff in the Construction, Hospitality & Primary Industries subjects. In 2022, St Paul’s has introduced Human Services- Aged Care, where students study the course in the neighbouring Apollo Aged Care centre using state of the art facilities and gaining opportunities in practical experiences. The school is investigating the opportunity to introduce Automotive in Year 9 2023, there are so many students from farms who are expert in small machines, VET subjects offer experiences in workplaces and TAFE credentials supporting workforce employment.
School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships and Work Experience: a range of students begin School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships and Work Experience at St Paul’s usually in Year 10, where they can work with an employer one day a week and also begin TAFE credentials. These programs provide students with the dual opportunity of meeting the expectations of employers, TAFE and school, especially assessment requirements within this program. St Paul’s supports a flexible Learning & Teaching program to cater for the individual needs of each student based on the advice of Mr Lee Hancock, Leader of Innovation and Engagement in Work.
Focusing on data in Years 7 & 8 to improve student outcomes: at St Paul’s the goal from the Year 7 classroom experience is to build a learning profile for each student. Year 8 is considered a vital year to position students in the best academic pathways as students and their families can choose Year 9 & 10 subjects and onwards. In 2022, St Paul’s is reviewing data from creating classes in English and Maths where male, female and mixed classes are taught specific to the interest of boys and girls. Year 8 allows the Year 7 NAPLAN data to be tested against Year 9 NAPLAN data in Literacy and Numeracy. St Paul’s is committed to programs that demonstrate student academic growth, we believe creative learning programs specific to the Year 7 cohort in Year 8 helps builds data towards improving the potential of each student.
Year 11 students and their teachers rating engagement and capacity/potential: The Learning Pulse: St Paul’s has developed the Learning Pulse in Year 11, in Term 2 each Year 11 student and their teacher independently rates their efforts from 0-100 in engagement (meeting and exceeding teacher expectations) and capacity/potential (demonstration of learning to the student’s full potential). This data is rich, allowing for engagement with each student and their families during Term 3 prior to Preliminary exams and subsequently at the beginning of the HSC course in Term 4.
All schools should present their own learning goals specific to their local context, at St Paul’s the school seeks to be dynamic by getting to know each student and engaging parents in developing a program that gives their child the opportunity to improve, always built on valid data. I always welcome families to contact me to discuss the progress of their son or daughter and plan their way forward.

Harmony Week
The message of Harmony Day is 'everyone belongs', the Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone. Today students in Pastoral care coloured and painted hands with words of inclusion and acceptance of all people. Orange is the colour that represents this day and you can see this dominating the hands the students created.
Keeping your children safe online
As a parent the online world can be very concerning. At St Paul’s we encourage and educate the students to use their devices safely. Another way parents can get help is the eSafety Commission. This is a government funded website many resources and information regarding unsafe behaviour online. If you are concerned with any online behaviour, please learn more at:
Our Parishes
We are blessed to be supported by two wonderful parish communities here at St. Paul’s College. I would invite and encourage you to have a look at their respective websites (by clicking on the links below) to find out about ways to connect with parish life, including to find out Mass times:
Mrs Bronwyn Shipton - Assistant Principal - Mission and Wellbeing
bronwyn.shipton@lism.catholic.edu.au
Another busy week has come and gone at St Paul’s. This week saw us celebrate the theme of Belonging with our Year 7 cohort at their Belonging Day on Monday. The format of the day was a new experience for us at St Paul’s and was a raging success! Our Year 7 students were engaged in a number of workshops and sessions which explored the themes of Belonging and not-belonging through games, art and stories. We certainly thank Fr James and Uncle Richard for sharing their stories with Year 7, exploring their own personal journey of Belonging and not Belonging.
Our young students were ably supported on the day by their Year 12 counterparts who led small group sessions well and showed themselves to be wonderful role models for the Year 7’s. There were certainly many highlights on the day, but especially noteworthy was the rendition of ‘My Lighthouse’ by the Year 7’s for their parents and the epic games of tug-o-war, two excellent examples of ‘belonging’.
Our Lent appeal is still ongoing as we prepare for the Holy season of Easter. Students are encouraged to make small donations in PC class to support the work of Caritas in providing development and aid projects to many places around the world, and even in Australian communities. There is also Bishop Greg’s flood appeal which families may be interested in supporting:
As we approach Easter the College will be planning our Easter liturgy. In celebrating Liturgies at school we have found in the recent past a decline in the availability of student Altar servers. Any student in Year 7 or 8 who performed as an Altar server in primary school is encouraged to see Mr. Pollock to volunteer to do this important job at Liturgies at St Paul’s as COVID restrictions ease and we are able to support Fr James in this manner.
Unfortunately, because of circumstances related to recent flooding, our Senior Formation experience LEAD has been postponed to term 2. Our Senior Ministry leaders will be given the opportunity to take part in this experience in Week 4 Term 2. Our Year 7 experience, TRANSITUS, is scheduled to go ahead on 31 March to 1 April. The students successful in being selected for this experience have already received their permission notes.
Finally, each Tuesday Lou, our YMO, hosts REACH, an opportunity for students at St Paul’s to have a quiet space to explore and develop their spirituality in a casual atmosphere. Students of all years are welcome at lunchtimes on Tuesdays.
Thank you and have a good week,
Mr Will Pollock - Leader of Evangelisation
will.pollock@lism.catholic.edu.au
The weeks have been flying by and I am pleased to report that the vast majority of our students have been working hard in class and complying with academic, behaviour and uniform expectations at St Paul’s College.
The Positive Behaviour Reward Scheme (PBRS) is building and our current leaders are; Year 7 - Tahlia Wall on 760 points, Year 8 - Abby Breitkreus on 710 points, Year 9 - Destiny Collingwood on 700 points, Year 10 - Clancy Prior and Alexander Turley-Collins on 440 points, Year 11 - Hannah Moody on 420 points and Year 12 - Eric Northey on 460 points. The points leader in each Year Group at 3.25pm on Thursday 7th April will win $100.00 in a Coastline Credit Union savings account.
Students need to remind their teachers to keep awarding these points when they are exhibiting positive behaviour. We will then reset the points for Term 2 and do it all again.
The Year 11-12 House Basketball Challenge kicked off in Week 7. Farrelly defeated Edmund 24 points to 13 and MacKillop defeated McAuley 13 points to 9. By the time this article is printed results from Week 8’s games will have been determined and the rivalries will be building. The leading house at the end of this three week competition will receive 100 house points and all students will receive PBRS points for each game. Years 9-10 and Years 7-8 will be given the same opportunity during the early part of Term 2.
Year 12 are now permitted to wear their sports uniform on Thursdays even though many Year 12 students do not study SLR and Year 12 do not have timetabled sport. Mr Johns has approved this change after initial enquiries from Year 12 students who exercised their rights to use their student voice to provide input to the decision making processes at St Paul’s College. Overall compliance to uniform expectations has been very pleasing this year and I thank students and parents for making the effort to ensure that the correct uniform is worn correctly and for parents providing notes if this is not possible.
As we move closer to the end of Term 1 students will now be completing assessment tasks/assignments across all subject areas. Please encourage students to consult their teachers for clarification when the need arises. The staff at St Paul’s are keen to support our students along this academic journey.

Learning Walks and Talks
Our school is part of a Learning Collaborative; a growth, development and research partnership with Catholic Schools Lismore and Dr Lyn Sharratt. The focus of this partnership is to improve literacy across the College and to ensure that what we do in the classroom improves student learning.
Assessment literacy is essential to improve student learning and involves students having a clear understanding of the Learning Intentions and Success Criteria of a particular unit of work. This enables them to know what they are learning and why, and to determine how they are going in their learning.
As part of our goal to address student literacy shortcomings and improve learning in the classroom, the Learning Collaborative Team is conducting Learning Walks and Talks (LWT). We are focussing the LWTs with Year 8 in Term 1, gathering learning data. This data informs us of what we are doing, what we can do better and how this can then be used across other year levels.
The LWTs involve a small group of teachers and/or executive members entering a classroom for 5-7 minutes asking the students the following questions:
What are you learning and why are you learning this?
How are you going in that learning?
How do you know how you are doing in that learning?
How do you improve?
Where do you go for help if you’re stuck?
Through the LWTs, we can determine if students have a clear understanding of the Learning Intentions of a lesson and if they can explain the Success Criteria needed to achieve a particular Learning Intention.
This information can then be used in determining the effectiveness of professional learning undertaken by our teachers and in the provision of additional professional learning opportunities where needed.
Ultimately, we want all of our students to own their learning, to be critical thinkers and to be aspirational. Literacy encompasses all areas of learning and life. It allows for a more confident and literate employee with a greater chance of success within the world of work.
Ms Maria Littlejohn - Leader of Pedagogy

After many push backs this term, REACH has finally started for 2022! I will be hosting games and activities in the science block every Tuesday at lunch and I’m open to suggestions for what we should do.
Feel free to message the REACH Instagram page @reach_kmc or email Lou at louise.baird@lism.catholic.edu.au with your thoughts and ideas.
Find the Bishop
I have started a new activity to get students involved and enjoying time out in the playground. Every Tuesday morning, I will hide a picture of Bishop Greg, the Bishop of our diocese, around the playground. Whoever returns Bishop Greg back to me will receive a prize. I hope it brings a bit of joy to students’ days.
Events
Thursday and Friday of Week 9, selected Year 7 students accompanied by two Year 10 CSYMA students will be attending Transitus. Transitus is an overnight retreat where Year 7 students from around the south part of the diocese are provided the opportunity to connect and form bonds whilst playing games, completing activities and meeting in small groups. Two Year 10 students from each school will accompany the students and act as leaders, guiding small groups, running activities and giving talks to help inspire and influence their younger peers. Transitus is an event that has been running for around seven years now and is an important part of connecting students not only to each other, but to their faith.
A lot of events have been pushed to term 2 due to the recent floods that have especially affected our fellow Lismore Diocese schools. We keep them in our prayers and look forward to reuniting with them at LEAD Conference (Senior Ministry Team) and Shine (Year 9-12). Keep an eye out in the notices and upcoming newsletters for information about how you can attend these events.
Lou Baird Youth Ministry Officer (YMO)
Individual Sports Selections
Congratulations to the following students on being successful in their application and trail to make the Lismore Diocesan and NSWCCC teams.
Luke Calthorpe – Selected in the Open Boys Lismore Diocesan Rugby League team.
Emily Stuart – Selected in the U15’s Lismore Diocesan Touch Football team.
Ava Ryan – Selected in the Open Girls NSWCCC Cricket Team.
Diocesan Swimming
On Tuesday 15th March, our swimming squad travelled to Coffs Harbour to compete in the Lismore Diocesan Swimming Carnival. Although the weather was miserable, our students’ performance in the pool was not dampened. As a group, they were fantastic. Our school was placed 2nd overall, which is an incredible effort for such a small school within the Diocese. Well done.
I would like to thank the parents/carers who always travel and attend the swimming events. Not only do they support their child, but they also always encourage the entire St Paul’s team.
Individually, there were a number of standout performances throughout the day, resulting in a total of 8 students eligible to NSWCCC Swimming Championships. These will take place in Homebush, Sydney on April 6, 2022.

In the coming weeks, there are a number of opportunities for students to explore potential careers and upskill themselves. On Friday the 1st of April, a small group of students will be participating in an interactive online session delivered about Paramedicine. Delivered by a Paramedic with over twenty years of experience, students will receive their own first aid kit, explore first responder techniques and practices and hear from Charles Sturt University about the ever-popular Paramedicine Degree.
Also, if your young person is interested in further developing their swimming and lifesaving skills, they can register interest in the ‘Tracks to Lifeguarding Work Programme’ over the Easter holidays (see the visual). Free training and qualifications will be delivered in Macksville over the break, with free transport available. Please register your interest with Mr. Hancock ASAP.
Finally if you are in Year 11 or 12 I encourage you to register for the JobJump website. Please use the password ‘spcwk’ when registering. This website has information relating not only to University Pathways but also TAFE and employment opportunities.

Headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation is hosting mental health education sessions for Parents, Carers and Community Members supporting young people in communities across NSW. For more information and to register please go to:
We request your support in relation to partial day attendance of students. Arriving late and departing early places increased pressure on students, in relation to them needing to catch up on missed work. It also disrupts class learning when students enter or leave a lesson during class time.
We ask that appointments are made outside of class times and/or school hours. We realise that this is not always possible, therefore we require that the following occurs if your child has an appointment during the school day.
Early Departures
If you need to collect your child early a signed note MUST be provided to the Office, stating the reason and time the student is to be picked up. This must be provided to the Office prior to morning PC (between 8:30am and 8:55am) so that a pass out can be arranged for the student to leave class early. If a note is not able to be provided, an email with the information in regards to the appointment may be emailed to kmps@lism.catholic.edu.au
If a note or email is not provided to the Office, we cannot guarantee that a student will be ready for collection upon your arrival at the College, as rooming and class activities may change their location. This may result in a parent/caregiver having to wait until the end of a lesson before they can collect their child.
Emergencies
If an emergency situation occurs and your child must be collected immediately, we will endeavour to get them to you as quickly as possible.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving late MUST report to the College Office, so that they can be marked as present, prior to them going to class.
Thank you for your cooperation with these procedures.
It’s been a terrific 12 months for former St Paul’s student Levi Langham. Levi is working hard to gain a spot in the highly competitive boxing team for the Commonwealth Games which start on 28 July in Birmingham. Highlights of Levi’s career include being named Overall Fighter of the Year and Youth Boxer of the Year at the All Star Boxing Academy’s Annual Awards. He won the Queensland Youth Middleweight Championship and was a National Futures selection for the Australian Institute of Sport. Australia will be naming only one middleweight fighter to represent us in Birmingham so Levi will be travelling to Melbourne to make a claim on the spot. Well done Levi and good luck from all of us at St Paul’s.
Congratulations to former St Paul's College student Darby Lancaster on his selection to the AU 7s Men's Squad playing in Fiji. For more information about the squad and where to watch:
Former student success
St Paul's is blessed with exceptionally talented and high achieving students and we love to hear about their achievements after their days at St Paul's are over.
If you have any information regarding former students' successes we would be grateful if you could email the College kmps@lism.catholic.edu.au with details and if possible, photos.
St Paul's College Alumni
St Paul's College Alumni welcomes all past students from St Paul's (named Macleay Regional Catholic High School during the early '80's) and St Pius X High School.
As we build our Alumni contacts we can assist you to remain in touch with one another, enjoy organised reunions and events, keep up-to-date with the latest College news and have the opportunity to support the College and its current students.
You can register as a member of the Alumni by completing this form:
Please be assured that your contact details will be kept secure. We will not disclose your private information to any other third parties. However, if you are happy for your name and email address and year of graduation to be made available on an Alumni database, please indicate this on your registration form.
If your contact details, or those of your child's nominated emergency contacts, have changed please ensure that you inform the College as a priority.
Please email kmps@lism.catholic.edu.au with your new address/mobile number/work number.
This will assist us greatly in providing the best pastoral and academic care for your child.
Are you missing out on emails from the College?
Please note that many organisation email accounts (work email accounts) will block emails sent from the College. We highly recommend that you use a personal email account to receive communications from the College.
We are also aware that many email accounts will automatically place emails from institutions such as the College into the Spam/Junk/Promotions folder. Please check these regularly so you do not miss important information about your child.
If you are still not receiving emails from the College please let us know. We often find that families have accidentally 'unsubscribed' from our emails, this can be addressed quickly once we are aware.
