We are already half way through the school term and it has certainly been a busy one. As we continue our hard work at the College, thoughts are immediately drawn to those affected by the devastation of the flooding across SE Queensland, Lismore and surrounds. To comprehend the scale of this disaster is difficult, and to imagine the resilience required by the many families who have been impacted, is hard to fathom.
As a College community we continue to pray for those affected and continue to consider what we may be able to do to reach out to these communities, so they feel they are not alone. More details will follow.
The DIOCESE OF LISMORE has set up a 2022 FLOOD APPEAL – BSB 037-889 ACCT- 10615829 for those who may wish to contribute.
We commenced our LENTEN journey last week with our ASH WEDNESDAY service that was coordinated by Mr WillPollock and facilitated by Fr James. It was our second ceremony out under the Hangar in the open. The students were outstanding and the ceremony had an aura of reverence, grace and reflection.
Many thanks for your ongoing support as we wind back our COVID restrictions. We are no longer required to wear facemasks at the College and we are expecting another supply of RAT’s over the next few weeks. These have been delayed due to flooding. I will communicate to you all when these are received.
Students are now working on or working towards assessment pieces and I would strongly encourage parents/carers to ask their child/ren about the work that is being done in class and what presented assessments are requiring from them.
Our enrolment period for 2023 has now been launched and last week we commenced interviewing. It appears that numbers for Year 7, 2023 will be strong, illustrating the confidence the regional community have in what we continue to provide for our students – ongoing high quality Pastoral and Academic care!
This week we launched our Community Services - Aged Care course at the College, in partnership with Apollo Care – who manages Vincent Court. Our VET Coordinator Mr Graham Bramley, together with Ms Amanda Jones RN and 11 Year 11 students have worked together to create this tremendous opportunity. This qualification is recognised as part of their HSC and may lead to part time work and potentially direct access to Enrolled Nursing and/or Registered nursing. More importantly, it represents a direct response by the College to a skills shortage within the region and across Australia.
Finally, a reminder that students are expected to be dressed and conduct themselves in a way that reflects the standards expected from a St Paul’s Catholic College student. This includes uniform, jewellery, classroom work preparedness and engagement in studies. All College staff will continue to expect this and the support from the Parent/Carer is essential and always appreciated.

New HSC curriculum offerings at St Paul’s: HSC VET Human Services (Aged Care)
One of the exciting discussions held at St Paul’s is the quest to introduce new curriculum offerings for our students. In 2021, our Principal Mr Johns recognised an opportunity for many of our students to be involved in nursing options specifically in Aged Care. A number of Aged Care facilities within the Macleay Valley have met with Mr Johns and pledged opportunities for our students during their training, vacation work experience and post school employment opportunities. In 2022 St Paul’s is pleased to announce the teaching of VET Human Services (Aged Care) to our first cohort in Year 11 2022.
The school has employed an outstanding educator to facilitate the teaching of Human Services at our school. Amanda Jones presents as a highly experienced educator with industry experience in the Health, Aged and Community sectors, 16 years as a University, Clinical and Competency based qualified Registered Nurse and Vocational Educator including Management experience with TAFE NSW and NV College. Amanda will be teaching our students primarily in learning spaces next door to St Paul’s at the Vincent Court Aged Care facility, where our students will use state of the art equipment and closely support the facility’s care of their residents.
I had the wonderful opportunity to meet with Ms Jones and her class recently as they presented a range of questions from their study regarding hygiene. There were many questions linking to the College’s sanitation practices, hand hygiene practices including the demonstration of correct hand washing, understanding of the College's cleaning schedule, the identification of the harshness of certain gels & soaps and resulting concerns for users e.g. dermatitis, discussion of best practice for soap dispensing in toilets etc. I brought these enquiries to the Week 5 College Executive meeting which sparked outstanding discussion regarding these matters and opportunities for the College in the future. Progressive schools function when the voices of students can be heard in so many areas of school life, and the feedback from the very impressive Year 11 Human Services group will continue to assist us at St Paul’s as the College strives to provide all our students with further opportunities. I look forward to providing you with further new curriculum initiatives at St Paul’s, and I look forward to watching the continuing development of our fantastic Human Services students at our College.

Flood Appeal
Our hearts and prayers go out to all in our community and those further afield who have and will continue to suffer from effects of the recent floods. We are liaising with school and leaders in our Diocese in regards to the best way to help these devastated communities. We will be in contact with all our College community with targeted appeals in the near future.

Uniform as the months get colder
A big thank you to all the parents/guardians who are supporting the College with making sure your child/ren are in the correct uniform and ready to learn each day. As the weeks roll on, the cooler days are not far away, so too are our College hoodies, designed by the students in collaboration with our local aboriginal artist. These hoodies will be arriving at Team Spirit in May and we will be updating you all via the normal communication channels as we know more.
As we await the arrival of the hoodie, students who are not wearing the correct College jumper or jacket will be required to remove the incorrect jumper and given the option of one of our second hand jumpers to wear for the day. If your child has a note in regards to the jumper, we will still be asking your child to wear a freshly washed jumper for the day. We will be discussing this with your child and we would encourage you to reinforce this as they are getting prepared for school in the morning. On Wednesday of Week 4 the St Paul’s community commemorated Ash Wednesday with a liturgy led by Fr James. Our students and staff engaged thoughtfully in the ceremony, which culminated in the sprinkling of Ashes on the head. The Ashes remind us to commit to our Lenten commitment of preparation and sacrifice in preparation for the joyous Easter Season ahead. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which for Christians is a period of fasting and preparation for Easter.
The ceremony also marked the beginning of our Project Compassion and Flood Relief programs, where the College community will be able to put their Catholic faith into action in helping those in need both locally and globally. Our students are encouraged to give generously to the Project Compassion campaign in Pastoral Care time, and we will be providing details for ways to assist the communities to our north.
Unfortunately the upcoming LEAD conference has been postponed because of the flooding in the north of the Diocese. Our senior ministry leaders will have the opportunity to engage with their colleagues in the other schools in the middle of term two. At this stage Transitus is still going ahead for year 7, so I ask for those students who received an expression of interest form to return it to the office or Mr. Pollock as soon as possible.
In week 8 our year 7 students will take part in their Belonging Day. The final format of the day is still being finalised, however students will be off-site from 12.30pm, and we will be welcoming parents to a BBQ supper and meet and greet with year 7’s pastoral care teachers and the College Executive.
Finally, we welcome all members of the St Paul’s community to Mass in both Kempsey and South West Rocks each weekend. Mass times for Kempsey are 6pm on Saturday and 9.30am on Sunday, while South West Rocks is 9.30am on Saturday and 7.30am on Sunday. Weekday Masses and Masses at Crescent Head, Smithtown and Willawarrin can be found on the Parish website.

Positive Behaviour Rewards System
As this article goes to print we will be giving the first of our minor awards in the new Positive Behaviour Rewards System (PBRS). Leaders at the halfway mark of Term 1 are Tahlia Wall (Year 7) on 400 points, Abby Brietkreus (Year 8) on 610 points, Riley Moffitt (Year 9) on 410 points, Darcy Swaine (Year 10) on 370 points, Dylan Smith (Year 11) on 340 points and Ella Allen (Year 12) on 410 points.
Teachers are always looking to reward all aspects of positive behaviour and the students are responding very well to this new initiative. The prize for each Year level will be $100.00 per term and we will be rolling out the first of our House Sport initiatives over the next few weeks allowing students to access points by competing in lunchtime sporting competitions.
Teachers will be looking to award points in multiples of 10 for things like arriving to classes and Pastoral Care on time, wearing the correct uniform, contributing respectfully to class discussions, staying on task, completing homework tasks, participating in College activities like the swimming/athletic carnivals, St Paul’s feast day, reading at Masses or liturgies, Anzac Day March, debating, team or individual sports, Da Vinci Decathlon, Show Team, assisting at the ag farm, Hall Crew etc.etc., reading aloud in class, willingness to help staff or other students when needed, having a positive attitude to work, looking for extra work when you have finished set tasks.
If students think they are making a positive contribution please encourage them to remind their teachers to reward them with PBRS points.
I have included in this report the College Uniform Policy in its entirety and would encourage you to read this policy and discuss it with your child(ren). Whilst in excess of 90% of students are always wearing their correct uniform we still have a small minority of students who continue to breach the rules in this regard and staff would appreciate the assistance of parents in ensuring that students are correctly attired. The College is happy to help with requests for the replacement of student uniforms in cases of financial hardship.
Uniform Policy
Wearing full school uniform is compulsory. It is important that all students wear our uniform and take pride in their appearance, as this is a very public way of exhibiting our College identity.
Students are required to wear the full uniform to and from school and we require that 'parts' of the uniform not be worn in public out of school hours. Students found to be participating in illegal activities, and smoking, while wearing school uniform will be given consequences equivalent to the offence being committed at school.
If, for any reason, a student is unable to be in full school uniform they must have a note written and signed by their parent/carer explaining the problem and the expected day when the student will be back in full uniform. It is expected that this will be for only a short period of time.
If a student is unable to wear the full PE uniform to school on sports or sport prac day, then they must wear full school uniform to and from school, and change into the PE uniform they have for their periods of sport.
During all swimming activities, including swimming carnivals, swimming attire must be appropriate for the activity being undertaken for the time of year. Rash shirts and board shorts may be worn by students. Female students are not, under any circumstances, to wear string bikinis or the type of bikinis used for sun baking. Sport bikinis will be allowed as in the type used in surf carnivals.
Uniform at Sports Carnivals
During all sporting carnivals (Athletics and Swimming), students in years 7-11 must be dressed in full College sports uniform with the option of wearing a House coloured T-shirt or polo shirt. Only year 12 students are permitted to attend dressed as novelty characters with modesty being a key requirement. This is not an out of uniform day. On these days, students are permitted to change into more appropriate competition attire only whilst they are competing. Containers of coloured sprays, dyes, coloured zinc etc. are not to be brought to carnivals.

Shoes
Footwear is an important safety item. Good soles provide a sound grip on the floor preventing accidents such as slips, trips and falls from occurring. Footwear can also protect feet from damage caused by accidents such as falling objects or chemical spillages. The College strongly recommends a shoe with a small heel, for added safety and support.
Accessories (for all students 7-12)
- Up to two small plain studs (Maximum 5 mm in diameter) or sleepers (Maximum 15 mm in diameter) in each ear (only).
- No visible facial or body piercing is permitted.
- No visible tattoos are permitted.
- One small plain ring may be worn. NOT one ring on each hand.
- No bangles, bands or bracelets. (Medical alert bracelets are the exception to this)
- One plain metal chain necklace with or without small cross only. (Medical alert necklaces are the exception to this)
- Inappropriate jewellery will be confiscated and kept until the end of term. All care will be taken, but no responsibility accepted.
- Make-up of any description is not permitted for any students in years 7-10 (this includes tinted moisturiser, and coloured lip gloss). Year 11 and 12 students may minimally use make-up such as foundation and mascara which are of natural shades only. Minimal and Natural are the keywords here.
- No eyelash extensions are permitted.
- Nail polish must be clear.
- The Year 12 Rugby type jerseys are a privilege and are not an official College uniform item. If these are allowed to be worn at school it will only be in conjunction with the correct uniform. Where the College uniform is not correct, the jersey will be removed until the uniform is corrected.
Hair
Hair accessories should be a plain design in black, blue or white.
Hairstyle is a matter that invites good taste and judgement as to appropriateness. The College has particular expectations in regards to hairstyles, which are to be adhered to. Allowing a student to adopt the latest fad or trend is not always consistent with both these points.
Parents are asked to ensure that their child’s hairstyle conforms to the following:
● Hair should be neatly groomed and maintained at all times;
● Extremes in hairstyles are unacceptable (cause reputational damage in the community)
● Hair should not be overly styled by the use of hair products
● Hair is not to be tinted or coloured in any colour other than that of a natural hair colour
● Long hair must be kept neat and off the face. Long strands such as ‘rat’s tails’ are unacceptable as are dreadlocks.
The Principal has the final say as to the appropriateness of a hairstyle.
Boys must be clean-shaven at all times. Facial hair is permitted only with the Principal's permission in respect to religious and cultural aspects only.
Hats/Caps
The College cap and bucket hat is a compulsory College uniform item for all students at the College. Students must be wearing a College cap or bucket hat during passive and active outdoor activity.
Safety at the Bus Bay
The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) has funded the purchase and installation of a safety fence in the College bus bay at the North Street entrance. I would encourage all parents who pick up their child(ren) after school to complete these pick ups on Sea Street to alleviate any congestion which could possibly occur in the North Street bus bay area. The installation of the safety fence will enhance the safety of all students who catch buses at St Paul’s College and is an initiative of the Office of Work, Health and Safety at the Catholic Schools Office, Lismore.

What is pedagogy and what pedagogical activities have been going on in Year 11 and 12 so far this year?
Pedagogy is defined as the method, and practice, of teaching. Essentially it refers to the way teachers deliver the content of the curriculum to a class. At St Paul’s Catholic College we aim to provide an engaging, student-centred pedagogy that improves student learning. Our Year 11 and 12 teachers design a wide array of activities to engage their students across the variety of subjects on offer.
In Mrs Nolan’s Year 11 Textiles class, the students are currently compiling a resource folio of information and samples to showcase the elements and principles of design and manufacturing methods. Students are learning to use Adobe indesign to compile their information and display the practical components such as seams, hems, and zippers as well as embellishing techniques, free motion embroidery, hand embroidery, and felting.
Mrs Clarke’s Year 12 Standard English is studying Module A: Language, Identity and Culture in Year 12 Standard English. The prescribed text is Henry Lawson’s short stories. They have been reading the stories and deconstructing them. Last week the students also looked at some essay samples and identified specific features of the form to assist them with writing an analytical response for Lawson. The students have been responding well to the essay samples and have been learning new skills as well as reinforcing old.
In Mrs Tovey’s Biology class, the students are creating models to demonstrate the process of DNA replication and protein synthesis. They will use these models to teach a family member the process and to explain the importance of proteins.
Mrs Kerr’s Year 11 Chemistry has been looking at the characteristics of elements and how they can be separated. They are now working on an assessment which requires them to individually plan, conduct and write up an experiment.
In Mrs Shipton’s Year 12 Textiles the students are at a very exciting part of their Major Textiles Project development; starting the projects that they have spent almost a Term designing. This is a very daunting but rewarding part of textiles as the students get to see their designs come to life. They are creating a variety of individual pieces including: felting mushrooms, dyeing fabrics with leaves and rusty nails, making fabric from colourful threads and sewing bodice pieces together. Never a dull moment in Textiles!
In Mr Hancock’s Modern History classes the students have been engaging in some very creative pedagogical activities. The Year 11 class has recently completed an investigation into Representation & Commemoration of History. The students created their own documentaries and explained the methods involved in constructing historical sources. In the Year 12 class, the students are looking into the nature of the Soviet Union, in particular its creation, the leadership and impacts of Stalin's totalitarianism.
Mrs Clarke’s Year 11 Ancient History has been examining the ways history is represented through film. They are investigating the evidence available and comparing how personalities and events have been reinterpreted through film. The students responded to extracts from Homer’s ‘Iliad’, investigated evidence for the Trojan Wars and watched the film ‘Troy’. They are now moving on to Sparta and considering the representation of Leonidas and Xerxes in film. A fun and engaging topic which the students always enjoy!
In Mr Taylor’s Year 11 Industrial Technology Metals and Engineering class the students are currently developing a Project folio. The students are researching and analysing a range of existing designs, tools, materials, and construction techniques in order to find the best possible solutions to their design problem. They are currently using a pre-made document to fill in as a guide. This is designed to support all students to access the structure of the task and sets the base standards that will be accepted in the Year 12 project folio marking.
My Year 12 Earth and Environmental Science class has been learning about the development and evolution of life on Earth. Recently, the students created a physical model of hydrothermal vents to demonstrate their formation in the deep ocean. They also dissected a Balmain Bug and compared it to the anatomy of trilobites, an extinct form of life that existed from around 500 million years ago.
Mrs Keith’s Year 11 Biology students have been studying the ultrastructure of the cell including cellular transport of materials across cell membranes. Some of the contexts explored include how this relates to the physiology of marine & aquatic organisms and human health. Activities undertaken in class have included a range of modelling and investigations using both artificial and natural membranes to explore these concepts further.

Hi, my name is Lou and I am the Youth Ministry Officer at St Paul’s for this year. My job is to organise and attend retreats and events with students, help out in a range of different classes, run lunchtime groups and be a role model for all students. I will be updating the newsletter each week with ministry and retreat news, so keep an eye out for important info.
REACH lunchtime group
After a busy start to the term, I’ve finally been able to start up St Paul’s REACH group again. REACH (which stands for Resting Everything Against Christ Heart) is a group that runs at lunchtime each Tuesday where students from all grades are welcome and consists of games, activities and discussions together. The aim of the group is to build a safe space for students and to create bonds amongst students who may not usually talk.
REACH starts this week, everyone is welcome.

Workers Urgently Needed
We need volunteers to help in our canteen either once a week, fortnight or month. No special skills required. We request your support in relation to partial day attendance of students. Arriving late and departing early places increased pressure on students, in relation to them needing to catch up on missed work. It also disrupts class learning when students enter or leave a lesson during class time.
We ask that appointments are made outside of class times and/or school hours. We realise that this is not always possible, therefore we require that the following occurs if your child has an appointment during the school day.
Early Departures
If you need to collect your child early a signed note MUST be provided to the Office, stating the reason and time the student is to be picked up. This must be provided to the Office prior to morning PC (between 8:30am and 8:55am) so that a pass out can be arranged for the student to leave class early. If a note is not able to be provided, an email with the information in regards to the appointment may be emailed to kmps@lism.catholic.edu.au
If a note or email is not provided to the Office, we cannot guarantee that a student will be ready for collection upon your arrival at the College, as rooming and class activities may change their location. This may result in a parent/caregiver having to wait until the end of a lesson before they can collect their child.
Emergencies
If an emergency situation occurs and your child must be collected immediately, we will endeavour to get them to you as quickly as possible.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving late MUST report to the College Office, so that they can be marked as present, prior to them going to class. Parents/carers are not required to come into the College with their child, however we do require an email or phone call from you to explain the reason for the late arrival.

At St Paul's College, the Hospitality industry curriculum framework provides students with the opportunity to gain industry recognised national vocational qualifications as part of their HSC.
The focus of last week's practical lesson was based around the importance of hygienic work practices, the potential hazards impacting food safety, safe work practices, knife-handling techniques and precision cuts including brunoise and chiffonnade.

Congratulations to former St Paul’s College student leader Josie Clarke who is a finalist for the 2022 NSW/ACT AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award. Josie is currently a PhD candidate at Sydney University where her research focuses on gene editing in plants. Josie developed ‘Ability Agriculture’ - an online platform and community on Facebook and Instagram which tells stories of those with a disability in Agriculture.
Congratulations to Chloe Wilson from Year 12, 2021 whose Major Textiles Project has been recognised at the TexStyle Exhibition. The Exhibition, which showcases 40 exhibitors from across NSW, features projects from students who studied Textiles and Design for the 2021 HSC. The Exhibition is on display at the Embroiderer’s Guild Gallery at Concord until 25 March.
